We are social (lgbt) creatures

Gayice articlesLaugavegur 22 is Reykjavik´s queerest corner. Again.  Truno´s busy groundfloor is full of people surfing the internet in search of fun and happiness while sharing their status on Facebook and tagging friends which is extremely popular thing to do in Iceland. Some might even be "Grind´ring", "Scruffing" and "Growling" with their fancy smartphones.  On weekends Barbara´s crowded dancefloor above Truno rocks the house from late midnight until early morning.  Some twenty years ago Laugavegur 22 was the home of the queers and the curious. Every  weekend the house was packed, at least thats how i remember it. But if we were to remove the labtops and the smartphones, would laugavegur 22 be so much different from what it used to be?

In recent years more and more LGBT people come out at a younger age and lgbt parents are much more visible than ever. Two things which are obiously different from the past. Social networks (such as Facebook) is playing an important role in driving lgbt community´s visibility and awareness. It´s easier than ever to connect with others and share experiences which helps those who are still to come out to take the step forward. And is also a good support for those who have already come out and seek support. They see they are not alone in this world, being gay is ok!

The online world shapes the offline world and the other way around. But in the end we´re social creatures who like to interact with other human beings. Laugavegur 22 is as lively as it has ever been. It´s a queer little world of it´s own, a small and friendly little spot where you can interact with friends and make new ones. It´s the hearth of gay reykjavik.
