A queer night out in town

E-mail Print PDF

Gayice.is articleThe local gay scene in Reykjavik is very small but it´s open and friendly. Most of the time you´ll find the local venues mixed with gays and straight people partying together with the exception of The Boys Only Club which is men only. The gay (LGBT) places to goto are  Gay 46 on Hverfsigata 46 (ground floor), Boys only Club and Gay 46 both located on Hverfisgata 46 and the Queer center which is located on Laugavegur 3 (4th floor). All venues are within short walk from each other.

Gay 46 is the latest addition to Reykjavik´s gay scene, located on Hverfsigata 46. It has big bar area, pool tables and a dance floor. Gay 46 is usually busy during weekends but also a nice place for an early drink during weekdays and weekends.

The Boys Only Club is a small bar/club located on Hverfisgata 46 in the same building as Gay 46 (entrance is from inside Gay 46). The club is open on Fridays and Saturdays and has a small bar and a dark room in the back. Expect to be charged small amount to enter (ISK 500). MSC Iceland is a social group for gay men and used to run it´s own club which has now closed (visit the club´s website for updates).

The Queer center is located on Laugavegur 3 and has a small cafe & library which is open Monday and Thursday evenings from 8 pm - 23.00 pm. Opening hours might be shorter during summer (July).

Events

Every year there are several events worth checking out. Reykjavik Gay Pride has become one of the biggest event in Iceland. The Saturday parade and outdoor concert attracts over 60-70.000 people every year. BEARS ON ICE festival is held in Reykjavik the second weekend of September. This eccentric little festival attracts small number of bears and friends from all over the world and has become an important part of the local gay scene.
