Panel Discussion: Films and Minorities
Kimberly Reed's documentary Prodigal Sons is a journey in itself which in fact does not only shed light on the struggles of transgender transitioning but also raises issues about gender identity alongside a personal family narrative about mental disorders. Kimberly will discuss the making of the film and how it has affected the communities where it has been shown. Furthermore the panel will discuss how films can help raise awareness and put forth issues relating to minorities. Prodigal Sons will screen at 12 in the Nordic House and will be followed by discussions.

Masterclass with the director João Pedro Rodrigues
João Pedro Rodrigues, director in RIFF’s spotlight, throws a masterclass during the festival. Rodrigues studied filmmaking in Lissabon and has worked both as an editor and a director. João Pedro Rodrigues directed his first feature-length film, The Phantom, in 2000, dealing with homosexual affection and aimed at catering to the demands of a growing influence of gays and gay culture in Portugal. His second feature film, Two Drifters (2005), was presented at the Cannes Film, and his most recent work is To Die Like a Man (2009).
