same-sex-marriage

A number of foreign same sex couples travel to Iceland every year to get married in a country that allows same sex marriages. When same sex marriage was legalized in Iceland in June 2010 legal differences between heterosexual marriage and same sex marriage (cohabitation as it was called) were eliminated; same sex marriage became fully equal with marriage on all levels.

Wedding visits are getting more popular

Pink Iceland, Iceland´s leading LGBT travel agency, has organized number of gay weddings since launching their service and wedding visits are becoming more and more popular every year.

According to Eva María at Pink Iceland there are number of reasons why Iceland is chosen as a marriage destination. "Iceland has a very progressive legislation and has legalized same sex marriage which is important. But the fact that Iceland as a society is very open towards gay people plays an important role as well. Gay and lesbian couples choose Iceland because it is gay friendly" say Eva Maria. This year Pink Iceland has organized 12 wedding ceremonies and Eva sees a bright future with more couples coming to Iceland to seal their love.
