Ég, Jóhanna is a powerful and personal theatre production at Tjarnarbíó, where the story of Joan of Arc is retold in a new way. The work is a rebellion against the gender binary and explores identity, power, war, the body and freedom.

The production is based on I, Joan by British playwright Charlie Josephine, which was staged to great acclaim at Shakespeare’s Globe in London in 2022. In the Icelandic production, Jóhanna is a non-binary character: electric, stubborn and full of hope.

The work is both a celebration and a revolution; a passionate reimagining of one of Europe’s best-known stories, asking who gets to tell the story, who gets to define heroes, and how we break free from the roles assigned to us.

Ég, Jóhanna is performed in icelandic at Tjarnarbíó from 7–17 May. Tickets start at ISK 4,900.

Playwright: Charlie Josephine
Translation: Valgeir Skagfjörð
Director: Aron Martin Ásgerðarson
