A recent match between the local gay football team Styrmir and a celebrity line-up received a well earned attention in the Icelandic media. The purpose of the game was to drum up some publicity for the coming up Iceland Express Cup in April and to address the issue of homophobia in sports resulting in manly talented players giving up their career.

New gay venue opens

Barbara

This weekend the local gay scene celebrates the opening of a new gay venue in town. This is BarBarbara which opens Friday March 6th.  BarBarbara´s home is on Laugavegur 22 which was the home  of the legendary gay club 22 which ruled the world in the 90s.

Gay Pride 

Hinsegin dagar í Reykjavík – Reykjavík Gay Pride – announces its annual general meeting, which will be held March 7th 2009 at 14:00 in the Rainbow Room of the Queer Center, Laugavegur 3, 4th floor. The Gay Pride festivities in Reykjavík, organized by the board and pride committee of the organization,  have been a marvellous success since 1999.

Mrs. Johanna Sigurdardottir is the world’s first openly gay prime minister leading a newly formed government after a conservative-led government for 2 years recently failed. Mrs, Sigurðardóttir, a former flight attendant and union organizer,  has a successful carrier in politics for over 30 years.
